A Recurring Smoker

By Jean Rasbridge

Cigarette butt. For sixteen years I had not smoked a single cigarette. Then, after a small accident, I had just one, single cigarette – and I was hooked again.

The first time had been difficult enough. I had almost given up giving up. Until my young son came home from nursery crying his eyes out.

He had just had his first lesson about smoking – and was convinced I was going to die.

I tried everything to stop then. Finally, for the sake of my son and with the help of acupuncture, I was able to give up.

The effort it took me to give up should have been enough warning for me not to stop again. But, after sixteen years, at a moment of weakness, I had one quick drag – and I was on it again.

Once again I was shocked by how little willpower I had. I again resorted to acupuncture, but unfortunately this time it didn’t work.

I tried to stop again and again but kept heading back to my old friend tobacco.

My son nagged me again, but somehow at the age of twenty five he wasn’t as persuasive as he had been at the age of five. This time it was my grand daughter that prompted me to stop. But once again, it was not easy to do so.

I finally gave up with great difficulty, using nicotine patches. It was horrible. They made my skin really red and inflamed, and I did feel that I was taking in nicotine all day long, rather than as and when I wanted it.

That was 3 years ago. I still like the smell of a cigarette when someone else is smoking, but will not have one again. I am still involved with cigarettes – ironically I now sell electronic cigarettes, and really hope they will hope someone else to give up with less of a struggle than I did.

However, I have not tried one. I learnt my lesson with that single, evil cigarette that sent me straight back into the worst habit of my life.
