Under attack on all sides, with a once almost universally acceptable habit making us into social outcasts, the last thing smokers need is more depressing news.
Yet that is literally what is coming out of new research into smoking by Australian researchers. The scientists followed a group of several hundred sheilas (why not men, I wonder) for over ten years, and managed not to get done for stalking once.
Out of 671 healthy women, 15% of the smokers developed depression, as opposed to 6.5% of the non-smokers.
The scientists believe that their findings will give greater encouragement to smokers to quit.
Alternatively, it might just make them depressed.
