Quitting with the E-cigarette

Can you quit with the E-cigarette?

Obviously there are two answers to this – yes and no – but I am going to go for a third one.

But first, a quick digression, so sit back and light up your fag (or inhale your vapour if you have already made the jump to an electronic cigarette).

There are essentially two ways in which the electronic cigarette is currently marketed. One is as healthier alternative to smoking. The electronic cigarette does contain nicotine, which is a harmful and addictive substance in its own right. However, many of the other harmful substances in tobacco, such as tar, cyanide and formaldehyde (see tomorrow’s post on harmful chemicals in tobacco for more details) have been removed.

Some claim that the e-cigarette is only that – a healthier alternative to smoking – and is not a smoking cessation device.

Other companies base their marketing on the claim that the e-cigarette is the most effective way to give up smoking.

Ultimately, it is our opinion that a smoker can only give up smoking if they are really willing and ready to do so. At that point, the electronic cigarette may be able to help you via nicotine replacement theory.

There have been no studies into just how effective the e-cigarette is at helping people to give up. However, feedback from smokers suggests that it can help smokers to give up. You can read what one of our own customers thinks in this post: E-Cigarette: A User’s Feedback.
