Medical writer Danny Rose wrote on Feb 4th that Australia looks set to fail to meet the target set for reducing smoking by 2020. Research by the University of Queensland has suggested that a substantial proportion of Australians will still be smoking in 2020!

Dr. Gartner says that the number of people quitting smoking must double to achieve the target – and that increasing the tobacco tax was the way to do this.

He also says that increased access to quitting medications, and allowing use of the smokeless e-cigarettes would help people quit, in addition to restricting marketing of conventional cigarettes.
