Tobacco Harm Reduction Update

Bill Godshallss THR update is circulating emails boxes at the moment.

I thought the following was the most shocking piece.

Snus/Nicotine Perceived as Dangerous as Cigarettes

Study finds 74% of daily smokers in Sweden inaccurately believe snus as hazardous as cigarettes, and 59% inaccurately believe longterm NRT use as hazardous as smoking; misinformation about snus and nicotine cited as reason. http://www.tobaccoinduceddiseases.com/content/pdf/1617-9625-8-9.pdf
The danger is in fact in the region of 1% of the risk of smoking, if that. Dr Nitzkin has pointed out that studies have found that snus causes no perceptible increase in the risk of death.
Essentially public health groups are lying about the risk of smokeless tobacco. The results? Surely the unecessary deaths of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of smokers – and billions of dollar in revenue from the pharmaceutical groups who profit from the selling of ineffective smoking cessation aids.
Here’s the rest of the update:
US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
CDC bemoans cigarette smoking, while refusing to acknowledge that smokefree tobacco/nicotine products are far less hazardous alternatives to cigarettes, that smokers can reduce health risks nearly as much by switching to smokefree tobacco/nicotine products as by quitting all tobacco/nicotine, and that millions of smokers have already done so. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm59e0907a1.htm?s_cid=mm59e0907a1_e
Safer combustible cigarettes?
As FDA develops list of potentially harmful cigarette smoke constituents http://www.capitolconnection.net/capcon/fda/fda083010_launch.htm and after more nations limit smoke constituents (as measured by unreliable machine tests), BAT tries again to develop safer cigarette by reducing constituents http://news.scotsman.com/uk/Long-wait-ahead-for-safer.6513598.jp
FDA / Electronic Cigarettes
FDA lets banned drug back on the market after just two weeks, but refuses to end 22 month import ban on e-cigarettes after the agency’s widely repeated claims about e-cigarettes have been exposed as false and misleading, after thousands of concerned e-cigarette consumers and many public health advocates complained to the agency, and after a lawsuit was filed and a federal judge ruled against the FDA. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/04/health/policy/04fda.html?_r=1&ref=us
Local Health Dept director ignores evidencehttp://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/e-cigarette-news/107483-massachusetts-northampton-board-health-considering-whether-regulate-e-cigarettes.html#post1632127 about e-cigarettes, claims that allowing adult smokers to use the smokefree alternatives will “undermine” cigarette laws and encourage youth usage. http://www.valleyadvocate.com/article.cfm?aid=12385
