An Open Letter to Humphrey Smith of Sam's Brewery
Dear Mr Smith
We are writing on behalf of one of our - and your - customers.
We were astonished to receive a letter from him telling us that Sam Smith's brewery had banished our electronic cigarette from your pubs.
He, and we, believe this is an unreasonable demand.
Electronic Cigarettes
Electronic cigarette are legal indoors and in places where the smoking ban prevents adults from engaging in smoking. Therefore, there is no legal need for your demand.
Electronic cigarettes do not cause any harm or irritation towards non-smokers. Therefore, there is no moral need for your ban, and no need for an infringement on liberty. There is no smell, and no lingering smoke, so it is easy to distinguish an e-smoker from someone smoking tobacco indoors.
An Illogical Move
As the usage of electronic cigarettes grow, your pubs will lose customers. There are already lists of pubs which allow "vaping" or e-smoking around the internet. Banning smoking (or, in this case, vaping) in pubs is like a teashop banning cakes. It is illogical.
Many scientists have stated that the electronic cigarette carries just one percent of the risk of smoking. In their recent consulation document, the MHRA estimated that the electronic cigarette, along with other new products, could save several hundred lives a year through smoking cessation alone. In discouraging use of the electronic cigarette you are, therefore, discouraging a product which experts believe could save lives.
Your customer tells us that your brewery is tyrannical and anti-fun, banning music and games. Please prove him wrong and reconsider your decision to ban the electronic cigarette.
