In May 2009, we sent a letter to tobacco free kids highlighting their ill informed support of Kennedy’s tobacco Bill (S.982) that was due to enter the senate on the 12th of May ?YEAR?. Here is the letter that was sent. We did not receive a reply from TFK, but we did receive a reply from Brad Rodu, the Professor of Medicine for Tobacco Harm Reduction research. You can view Brad’s response here.
Subject: Your letter
Dear Mr. Dunworth,
I am a professor of medicine and hold an endowed chair in tobacco harm reduction research at the University of Louisville in the States, and I read with interest your open letter to Tobacco Free Kids.
“… the war against tobacco, conducted by Tobacco Free Kids and their allies, is not about public health. “
Your position on the health effects of nicotine versus smoking is unimpeachable. There is no public health justification for denying smokers information about and access to safer sources of tobacco and nicotine. But the war against tobacco, conducted by Tobacco Free Kids and their allies, is not about public health. It has become the latest in a long line of misguided American moral crusades.
“…these anti-tobacco extremists will eventually be held partially responsible for the deaths of millions of uninformed smokers.”
You will get no response from TFK. That organization has a long history of refusing to discuss substantive issues regarding tobacco harm reduction. The American legislative process is closed to all but a few powerful interests, who will soon be gloating over their “success” in passing FDA regulation of tobacco. I am convinced that these anti-tobacco extremists will eventually be held partially responsible for the deaths of millions of uninformed smokers.
Professor of Medicine, Endowed Chair, Tobacco Harm Reduction Research, University of Louisville.
