What is the Electric Cigarette?
The electric cigarette is another word for the electronic cigarette, also known as the e-cigarette and the smokeless cigarette. The electronic cigarette is a device which enables users to inhale nicotine dissolved in a water solution without the usual toxins, tar or combustion assciated with the electronic cigarette.
Electric Cigarette or Electronic Cigarette?
We usually go for the second of the two words, so we were interested to see how many mentions electric cigarette got.
First we typed electric cigarette into google UK.
Electric Cigarette got over eight hundred thousands results, which seems quite a lot.
But that's nothing compared to electronic cigarette.
So electronic cigarettes gets ten million results, well over ten times the amount of electric cigarette.
Terminology Trends
The use of the word electric cigarette is growing.
In fact, according to google trends the word wasn't even used before 2008. Since then, it has seen some pretty spectacular growth.
Interestingly, as we have highlighted above, the word is most popular in South Africa - even exceeding the normally high volume US.
Again, Google trends shows the word plays second fiddle to electronic cigarette. As you can see from the graph below the use of the words electronic cigarette and e cigarette are both outpacing the growth of the word electric cigarette.
We suspect that the term electric cigarette is more often used by new users who are not yet familiar with the terminology. It doesn't matter what you call the thing, of course, but if you are confused make sure to use our electronic cigarette glossary to clear your head as well as your lungs!
