E Cigarette Direct’s Guide to Taking up Smoking
It is not easy to start smoking; smoking is an addiction which requires perseverance, willpower and grit to take up. But with our suggestions, and with the help of your peer group, you just might be able to do it.
The First Cigarette
That first cigarette is not pleasant. The harsh smoke will hurt your throat, and may make you gasp and cough. Resist the temptation to throw it away after one drag – you must persevere if you truly want to become a smoker. Also resist the temptation to just hold the smoke in your mouth – you must suck it down hard into your virgin lungs.
The Smell
The day after your first smoke, you may be distressed by the clinging smell of stale tobacco. Don’t worry! One of the wonderful things about becoming a smoker is that you will, in time, become utterly immune to the smell. (No one else does, but then that serves them right for not smoking!) The pain in the chest, unfortunately, is something you must learn to become used to.
Building up the Nicotine (Nicotine Placement Theory)
Don’t expect to become a 20 or 40 a day smoker overnight – it has taken many heavy smokers years of steady smoking to build up their habit. Instead, start off with a couple of weak cigarettes. You can help this along with a few beers - many smokers in the past got off to a good start with this method, although it is becoming more difficult now smoking has been banned in pubs.
As you begin to take the nicotine into your blood, slowly increase the strength, frequency and number of cigarettes you smoke. Don’t be too ambitious – just two or three weak cigarettes a day in the first month should do. If you are struggling, try drawing out a programme – and sticking to it!
Smoking Aids
There are many smoking aids designed to help you take up smoking. Nicotine substitutes such as the nicotine patch, nicotine inhalers and of course the e-cigarette are also designed to help you build up the nicotine level in your blood, increasing your addiction and therefore your desire to smoke. What’s more, many of these aids can be acquired for free from the National Unhealthy Service.
At some point, however, you must make the leap from these smoking aids to a cigarette. Remember, smoking aids can’t make you smoke – you must rely on your own will power for that!
Utilizing the Support of Friends
To become a true smoker, it is utterly essential to utilize the support of like-minded friends in the early days. Friends who will gently laugh and jeer at you when you weaken, until you once again resume the habit. Friends who will help you to persevere in the face of discrimination from annoying people such as mothers, teachers, girlfriends and so on. The good news is that once you have the habit firmly established, you will be able to continue on without your friends’ support – and even in the face of their opposition!
In Conclusion
It may not be easy to become a smoker, but the good news is that once you are a smoker it is very easy to remain one. It is perhaps surprising, however, that after all the effort needed to take up smoking, 80% of smokers want to give up. Lightweights!
