“American cigarettes more dangerous” not true say scientist

Anti-smoking groups have been clamouring that American cigarettes are twice as dangerous as real cigarettes.

But according to one professor that’s just not true.

The claim was based on the fact that there were higher levels of a single carcinogen in American cigarettes.

But just because there are lower levels of one out of 40 carcinogens in a cigarette does not necessarily make it safer, let alone significantly so.

It’s also a potentially dangerous claim.

If the process used to reduce those carcinogens creates, in the process, more carcinogens, the cigarettes could become more dangerous.

The real danger in smoking is the same with breathing in any smoke. As the smoke cools, tar and thousands of chemicals – and more to the point dozens of carcinogens – are created.

As an interesting aside, it’s worth considering low nicotine cigarettes.

These are often considered safer by smokers, but smoking diseases aren’t caused by nicotine. In fact, smokers tend to smoke more heavily to satisfy their cravings, and causing themselves more harm.

It goes to show that misinformation can be dangerous, which is why it is so important that anti-smoking groups stick to the truth!
