Smokers paradox refers to the benefits that smoking has – a paradox because of the overall harm that smoking has on our health. Before the smokers amongst you get too excited, though, remember that is almost universally accepted that smoking does a lot more harm than good.
Heart Attacks
As we all know, smoking increases the risk of having a heart attack. However, one examples of the paradox is that smokers have a better chance of surviving a heart attack after they have arrived in hospital. Unfortunately, a recent medical study found that smokers were more likely to die after a heart attack before they reached hospital. Ex-smokers, on the other hand, had a better chance of surviving a heart attach both before and after they reached hospital – so all the more reason to give up now!
Beneficial Properties of Tobacco
Then there is Conexyme Q10, a substance which is found in tobacco and which has numerous medical uses. Q10 is a substance that the body makes naturally in early life, but is needed as a substance in later life. In addition to being beneficial to cells, it relieves migraine headaches, meatabolic diseases, can increase survival rates after a heart attack, may protext the brain from degenerative diseases and is currently being investigated as a treatment for cancer. It is also now so valuable that the Chinese have stopped incinerating tobacco and have started extracting Conexyme Q10 from it. I am not sure if you can get any of these benefits from smoking cigarettes, though!
Parkinsons Disease
Smoking, along with coffee, appears to lead to a decrease in the risk of Parkinsons Disease, according to one scientific study. For each additional ten pack years smoked there was a decrease in the chance of getting Parkinons of 15%, while it was also estimated that a cup of coffee a day would lead to a 10% decrease in the chance of getting Parkinons. Current smokers have a 60% less chance of getting Parkinons, while current coffee drinkers have a 30% less chance of getting it. Although, before you get too excited, remember that only 1 in 1000 of the adult population that Parkinsons occurs in only 1 in 1000 of the adult population, whereas one in two adults will die of a smoking related disease.
