What's included in a vape kit?

Every vape kit contains the essentials you need to start vaping:

  • A vape device that contains or holds the battery (for some mod devices, you will usually need to purchase a battery separately)
  • A vape tank or pod that can be filled with e-liquid, or a prefilled pod that already contains e-liquid
  • Compatible coils that go inside the tank/pod (where applicable)

For refillable vape kits, you will need e-liquid. At E-Cigarette Direct, a compatible e-liquid comes with every refillable kit purchased.

What types of vape kit are there, and which is right for me?

Vape starter kits

Starter kits are ideal for both beginners and vapers looking for an easy-to-use device. Starter kits encompass a variety of device types including pod, pen and cigalike devices, but share easy-to-use features perfect for first-time vapers.

Pod vape kits

Pod vape kits are formed of a pod (which can be prefilled or refillable) and a device/battery that are clipped together. They include prefilled systems, which we find are ideal if you are switching from disposable devices, and refillable systems, which are the best option if you are looking for maximum cost savings, reduced waste and a wider range of flavour options. You will also find more advanced pod kits - these typically provide more power and functionality than standard pod kits, bridging the gap between pod and mod devices.

Vape pens

Vape pens have a slim, often round design, resembling the pens that give them their names. Vape pens are usually discrete and compact, fitting easily into a tight pocket. Typically easy to use, they are another great option if you are new to vaping.

Mod & tank kits

Mod and tank kits are formed of a device (the mod) and a tank that holds the e-liquid. They are usually bulkier than vape pens and pods and often have a larger battery capacity. Some mods have advanced functionality, while others are designed for ease of use. These devices are the best options for vapers looking for larger clouds of vapour.

What should I consider when choosing a vape kit?

When choosing a vape kit, key elements to consider include:

  • Battery size/longevity: How long would you like your vape device to last between charges? (Do note that a larger battery doesn’t necessarily mean a longer-lasting battery, as this also depends on the device’s power output.)
  • Ease of use: Do you want a device that you can simply put together and inhale to vape, or a more advanced device with multiple modes and customisable features?
  • Size/form factor: Would you prefer a more compact/lightweight device you can carry in your pocket, or a larger, more robust device?

FAQs

What else do I need to buy with a vape kit?

To get started with refillable kits, you’ll also need some e-liquid, while some mod kits will also require you to buy a replaceable battery. Prefilled pod kits typically don’t require you to buy anything extra. However, we do recommend you have some extra pods to hand and a spare device to use.

Most vape kits will also include a suitable charging cable. If not, these can be bought separately.

What's the best vape kit?

The best vape kit depends on how you vape and how much you want to spend. Prefilled pod kits are the easiest option and feel closest to a disposable, but you pay more for every millilitre of e-liquid. Refillable pod kits are our recommendation for most vapers: bottled e-liquid costs far less than prefilled pods, you get a much wider choice of flavours, and refilling creates less waste than throwing pods away. Mod kits suit experienced vapers who want bigger clouds and more control. If you want specific model recommendations, our vaping team tests every device we stock and keeps a current list of favourites on the Ashtray Blog.

What's the best vape kit to use when switching from disposables?

Since the UK's ban on disposable vapes in June 2025, we've helped thousands of customers switch to reusable devices. We've found that a pod device paired with disposable-style flavours such as bar salt e-liquids makes the best combination. Prefilled devices are the best option for convenience, while refillable devices are the best for cost effectiveness and reduced waste.

How much does a vape kit cost?

Vape kits at E-Cigarette Direct typically start at around £4. Prefilled pod kits are usually the cheapest way to get started, with many priced under £7. Most refillable pod kits sit between £10 and £30, while mod kits generally run from £30 to £50. Once you have the kit, you only pay for e-liquid, pods or coils, so running costs stay low.

Where can I get a free vape kit in the UK?

Some local stop smoking services offer free vape kits to adult smokers through government-backed swap schemes. Availability depends on your local council, so check with your local stop smoking service first. If a scheme isn't available in your area, reusable vape kits start from £3.99, and e-liquid comes with every refillable kit we sell.
