The 12 Best Vape Kits for 2021 (UK)

Updated: April 2021

When I started vaping in 2008 there wasn’t much choice when it came to vape kits in the UK. But as 2021 approaches, the opposite is almost true – there are so many devices and kits available that it’s hard to wade your way through the myriad of options.

What helps, though, is to narrow down your criteria. Are you looking for a starter kit or a high powered mod? What’s more important – flavour or clouds? Do you need something light and compact or is battery life more of a priority?

After all, the best vape kit for a new vaper will be a very different beast from the best vape kit for an experienced vaper who takes part in cloud-chasing competitions!

So, to help navigate to the best option for you, you’ll find a table view below which identifies what is special about each device in this post, along with a more detailed write up highlighting their key features.

How we selected these kits

It’s always tempting when writing a post like this to fill it with the latest, shiny devices.

But that would be a mistake.

Despite advances in technology, there are older vape kits that have withstood the test of time – and they’ve done so for a good reason.

The Aspire PockeX is a prime example of this – although it’s been around for several years now, it retains huge popularity. That’s probably down to the superb throat hit it gives – pretty much unmatched by any other starter kit we’ve experienced.

Instead, to select the kits here we’ve used a combination of our own ratings, the popularity of these devices, both in terms of sales and ‘on the scene’, as well as taking into account customer feedback. Very occasionally we’ll add a just launched kit to the list – but only if it totally blows us away in testing.

All the kits here are made to UK standards and are compliant with EU and UK regulations.

Types of vape kit

In this post you’ll find four types of vape devices.

Pod Systems: Pod vape systems were designed to be more compact and easier to use than mod systems. Typically, a pod system consists of a pod that clips into the part of the device that holds the battery. Closed pod systems refer to pods which come pre-filled with e-liquid (and can not usually be refilled), while open pods are refillable. See our round-up of the best pod systems here.

Pods have been evolving, and some devices have a power, battery life and functionality approaching that of an advanced mod device. These are often referred to as ‘pod mods’.

All-in-one vape devices: These devices contain everything you need to get started except the e-liquid. AIOs distinguish themselves by having no separate pod or tank, with e-liquid simply being filled into the top of the device itself.

Pen-style devices: Just as the name suggests, these devices are like an oversized pen and fit easily in the hand. Think chunky marker pen as opposed to a biro and you’ll be on the right track. See our round up of the best vape pens here.

Mod/tank kits: Mods are usually larger, more powerful vapes, often with a box design, and come with a separate tank. Some vape mods also come with more advanced functions and modes.

In this post you’ll find we also refer to MTL (Mouth-to-Lung) or DL (Direct-Lung) inhale. You can find an explanation what these terms mean in our MTL v. DL guide.

Best Vape Starter Kits for 2021

Aspire Pockex: Best throat hit

Aspire PockeX in different colours.

It’s not the first time that the Aspire PockeX makes it into our list of best starter kits. For a device which has now been around several years, it’s seen enduring popularity – not without reason. In addition to a solid build quality, this device produces one of the best throat hits we’ve experienced from an entry-level device. It also gives a superb throat hit, which I suspect is why it’s been so popular for so long.

What’s to like about it?

  • Easy-top-fill
  • Great throat hit
  • Great build quality

Top tip: It’s well worth putting a vape band around the glass in the tank. These cost just 99p, but help to protect the tank if it is dropped.

Hexa Vape 2: Easy to use, close to smoking

Silver Hexa Vape II in a car.

Not everyone wants a device which needs refilling. If you’re looking for a closed pod system (which comes with disposable cartridges) the Hexa Vape 2 is easily the best in its class. That’s down to the interplay between the technology and the cartridges. The cartridges combine two types of e-liquid – nicotine salts and freebase e-liquid – to create one of the closest experiences to smoking we’ve seen.

What’s to like about it?

  • Close to smoking
  • Super easy-to-use
  • Great flavours

Smok Nord 2: Compact, stylish, flexible

Smok Nord 2 in multiple colours.

If there’s been a serious challenger to the Aspire PockeX in recent years, it’s been the Smok Nord. The Smok Nord 2 is still a compact device but now comes with a longer lasting 1500 mAh battery, while an increased wattage range (up to 40 watts) and compatibility with lower resistance coils means you can get thicker, denser vapour. The Nord 2 retains the comfortable, duck-billed mouthpiece which many customers have told us they love.

What’s to like about it?

  • Compact
  • Comfortable mouthpiece
  • Larger battery capacity and wattage range than the original Nord

Innokin Adept Zlide: Long battery life, choice of vape styles

Innokin Adept Zlide, white, pictured on a table next to a laptop.

Not everyone wants a compact device, and for people looking for a chunkier mod device that still makes a great introduction to vaping, the Innokin Adept Zlide is a brilliant option. This device comes with a long-lasting 3000 mAh battery that easily beats the battery levels of most entry-level pod systems, while with a switch of the coil and a tweak of the airflow settings, you can go from a tight, restricted vape to a loose, airy vape with more vapour.

What’s to like about it?

  • Tough, rugged, water-resistant
  • Auto-coil detection makes it easy to use
  • Long-lasting battery

Vaporesso Xros: One handed refill

The tiny Vaporesso Xros - silver.

The Vaporesso Xros is a slim, easy-to-use pod device which is little bigger than a credit card. This highly regarded device comes with a choice of fire methods – either inhale to activate the device or press a button to fire it up. It’s also designed to be so easy to refill you can top it up with e-liquid with one hand. Ideal for beginners, this pod system is also popular with many experienced vapers as a back-up device.

What’s to like about it?

  • Easy to use
  • Super compact
  • Reaches full charge in 45 minutes or less

Uwell Caliburn G: Best kit for flavour

Uwell Caliburn G - blue.

The original Uwell Caliburn had already won a reputation for being the best kit for flavour. The new Caliburn G retains this emphasis on great taste, but with several improvements. A bigger battery capacity means you can vape for longer between charges, while a combination of adjustable airflow and replaceable coils means that you can vary your vape experience with a change of the coil.

What’s to like about it?

  • Great flavour
  • USB-Charging and longer battery life than the original
  • Dual airflow system

Best Pod Mod Kits for 2021

Voopoo Drag S/X: Stunning aesthetics

Voopoo Drag X - classics.

The Voopoo Drag S/X devices use a combination of leather and metal for a device which has stunning aesthetics and is comfortable to hold. There are two versions to choose from here. The Drag S comes with a fixed 2500 mAh battery and can produce up to 60 watts of power. Meanwhile, the Drag X, which can pump out up to 80 watts, is powered by a replaceable 18650 battery (not included) which makes it great for vapers who like to swap out the battery when it runs out of power instead of attaching the device to a USB-C cable.

What’s to like about it?

  • Stunning aesthetics
  • Plenty of power
  • Anti-scratch, antiperspirant and anti-fingerprint

Oxva Velocity 21700 Kit: Best pod mod for flavour

The Oxva Velocity Kit - black leather.

At the time of writing, we’re still waiting for the official UK launch of the Oxva Velocity kit, but after our product team told us that the sample they have is the best pod mod they’ve used all year, I had to include it. This device is well made and comes with great aesthetics, but is also unusual in that it takes three types of battery; 18650, 20700 or 21700. Choose 18650 for a smaller, lighter battery, 20700 for the longest life or 21700 for something in between. However, the biggest reason for including this device is the flavour it produces – which is simply superb!

What’s to like about it?

  • Well made
  • Long battery life
  • Superb flavour

Best vape mod kits for 2021

Geekvape Aegis Legend Zeus: Military-grade toughness

The Geekvape Aegis Legend - black and blue.

Geekvape has been firing on all cylinders recently and the Aegis Legend Zeus is just one of a series of great devices the company have been putting out. Geekvape pioneered a new breed of ultra-tough devices, and the Aegis Legend Zeus is IPV67 waterproof, shockproof and dustproof. The Aegis Legend is constructed from Magnesium Alloy for a body which is both light and resilient and uses two 18650 batteries (not included) to push out up to 200 watts of power.

What’s to like about it?

  • Water-proof, shockproof, dustproof
  • Light but strong
  • Great for clouds

Smok Scar 18: Powerful

Smok Scar 18 - Fluid Rainbow.

If you want a powerful mod that can produce a serious Direct-Lung vape, look no further than the Smok Scar 18. Powered by 2 18650 batteries (not included) the mod can pump out up to 230 watts of power and comes with the option of either variable wattage or temperature control. This device is a boon for advanced vapers who prefer the more consistent flavour and longer lasting coils you get with TC vaping. Like the Aegis Legend, the device is IPV67 waterproof, shockproof and dustproof.

What’s to like about it?

  • Water-proof, shockproof, dustproof
  • Up to 230 watts of power
  • Choose between variable wattage or temperature control

Innokin Coolfire Z50: Best for MTL Vaping

Innokin Coolfire Z50 Gun Metal

The Coolfire IV was one of our most popular mod devices for years, winning over MTL vapers because of its sturdy, aluminium design and reputation for being reliable, so it’s great to see a modern, kit version of this old favourite hit the shelves. In fact, the Coolfire Z50 was my go-to MTL kit for several months this year despite the never-ending series of samples I have to play with. It’s easy and simple to use and, combined with the Innokin Zlide tank, it delivers a superb MTL vape.

What’s to like about it?

  • 6 – 50 watts of power
  • Easy-to-use
  • Great MTL vape

Geekvape Obelisk FC 120: Fastest Charging Mod

Geekvape Obelisk FC 120 with USB-C charger.

Imagine leaving the house, grabbing your mod – and realising it’s just about to run out of charge! You either have to wait for an hour (or two!) while it charges OR go without your vape.

Enter the Geekvape Obelisk FC 120. Despite having a respectable 3700 mAh battery, this device charges in just 15 minutes!!! What’s more, it can also act as a power bank, so you can charge other devices like your phone from it.

At the time of writing, the Obelisk FC 120 hasn’t been launched, although we are expecting it very shortly. It’s performed extremely well in testing, but we haven’t yet had customer feedback. However, it is paired with the Geekvape Zeus tank, which is an excellent choice for cloud vaping and has an average feedback rating of 4.5/5 from 23 reviews.

What’s to like about it?

  • 0 – 100% charge in 15 minutes
  • Use as a power bank
  • Paired with the superb Zeus tank

Horizontech Falcon II tank + Innokin MVP 5/Smok G-Priv 3 Mod: Best for clouds

Blue Falcon II Tank

The Horizontech Falcon II tank remains the best tank we’ve seen for clouds. A lot of that is down to the fan woven conical mesh coil, which funnels the air up from the bottom of the coil for superb vapour clouds and in intense flavour, while the cotton and wood pulp filling material is designed to hold plenty of e-liquid.

White MVP 5 mod.

To handle the low resistance coils, you need to match the tank with a mod which can supply at least 75 watts of power. We suggest using it with either the superb Innokin MVP 5 mod, which comes with a long-lasting 5200 mAh fixed battery and a host of survival features, or the Smok G-Priv 3 with its colourful 2.4 inch screen and touch-screen controls.

What’s to like about it?

  • Thick, dense vapour
  • Wide wattage range with both mods
  • Suitable for advanced vapers

What’s going to happen in 2021?

Vape companies are continuously innovating, and one thing we can count on is more vape kits next year. In our expert predictions roundup, Vaporesso told us they expect 2021 to be the year of the pod mod, with devices increasingly being built to cater to both MTL and DL vapers. Innokin also sees a continued focus on pod systems, with efforts focussed on improving flavour, safety and providing more environmentally-friendly products.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on the best kits and updating this post as the year goes on. In the meantime, do let us know what your favourite kit is and why in the comments below!

  1. Hello James, now we are out of the EU can we petition the government to revert back to 5 ml tanks and 2.4 mg fluid strength?
