Types of pod kits

Prefilled pod kits

The easiest of all rechargeable vape devices. Simply pop in a pod with your flavour of choice, and replace when empty.

You’ll also find Big Puff devices that hold multiple pods, allowing you to rotate to the next pod when one is empty.

Best for: Vapers looking for a simple, convenient and cost-effective way to vape as well as those upgrading from a disposables vape.

Refillable pod kits

Refillable pod kits are suitable for most vapers. When the e-liquid in your pod runs out, you simply refill it. These devices are cheaper to run than prefilled pod kits, produce less waste and can be used with hundreds of different e-liquid flavours.

Best for: Vapers looking for a cost-effective way to vape and a large choice of flavours.

Advanced pod kits

Known as pod mods, advanced pod devices offer more power and control over your vape. For example, you can vary the amount of vapour and the airiness of your inhale vape. They can be used with a variety of e-liquid types, often including high VG e-liquids for larger clouds of vapour.

Best for: Vapers with some experience, as well as those who prefer more power and control over their vape.

Fixed v. replaceable coil pods

Refillable pods come in two types - pods with fixed coils, and pods with replaceable coils. The most convenient form are fixed- coil pods, as when the pod comes to the end of its life you just replace it. Pods with replaceable coils are more cost effective and involve less plastic waste, as you only replace one part of the pod.

Tips for using pod kits

Replacing the coil or pod

Coils and pods containing coils can last anything from several weeks for low-powered devices to a few days for high-powered devices. Replace the coil when the vape feels scratchy, produces less flavour or not enough vapour.

Let e-liquid soak into refillable pods

A simple but effective way to extend the life of the coil in your pod is to let the e-liquid soak into the coil for around five minutes before using it.

Different pods work with different e-liquids. Pods/coils for low-powered devices typically work best with nicotine salts and regular e-liquid with a VG:PG ratio of around 50:50. Pods for higher-powered devices usually work better with e-liquids with higher VG ratios, e.g. VG:PG 70:30.

FAQs

What are vape pod kits?

Pod kits are compact vaping devices made up of a rechargeable battery and a pod that holds the e-liquid. The pod clicks into the battery and can be swapped in seconds when it runs out or you fancy a different flavour, which makes pod kits simpler to use than tank-based kits.

Pod kits come in two forms. Prefilled pod kits use pods that arrive already filled with e-liquid, so there is no refilling at all. Refillable pod kits let you fill the pod yourself from a bottle of e-liquid, which costs less over time and opens up thousands of flavours.

Which is the best vape pod kit for beginners?

The Vaporesso Xros 6 Mini is our top pick for beginners. It is very easy to use, delivers great performance, and because you refill it from a bottle of e-liquid it costs far less to run than prefilled pods. If you want the absolute simplest start, the Elfbar 600 prefilled pod kit comes with pods already filled and no settings to learn.

Most new vapers do best going straight to a refillable kit as the savings quickly add up and the flavour choice is far wider. Prefilled kits suit anyone who wants zero fuss for their first few weeks.

Are vape pod kits better than mod and tank kits?

Pod kits are more compact and usually easier to use than mod kits. Mod and tank kits are larger, have a better battery life and are best for an airy vape and large vapour clouds. Pod kits usually give a tighter mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw that feels like a cigarette, while mod and tank kits are better suited to an airy direct-lung (DL) style.

What is the best vape pod system?

Our current favourite refillable pod kits are the Oxva Xlim Pro 3 and the Vaporesso Xros Pro 2, which both combine a refined design with standout flavour. For a wider comparison across prefilled and refillable devices, our best pod vapes guide matches top-rated kits to different needs and budgets.

Are pod kits a good alternative to disposable vapes?

Yes. Disposable vapes were banned from sale in the UK on 1 June 2025, and pod kits are the closest reusable replacement, with the same draw and nicotine strengths but a rechargeable battery and replaceable pods. Prefilled pod kits feel almost identical to use, and big puff options such as the SKE Bar 15K kit and the Nera 15K by Lost Mary carry many times more e-liquid than a single disposable ever could, while costing less per puff.
