The 20 Best Vape Kits for 2022 (UK)

Updated: January 2022

When I started vaping in 2008 there wasn’t much choice when it came to vape kits in the UK. But as 2022 approaches, the opposite is almost true – there are so many vape brands, devices and kits available that it’s hard to wade your way through the myriad of options.

What helps, though, is to narrow down your criteria. Are you looking for a starter kit or a high powered mod? What’s more important – flavour or clouds? Do you need something light and compact or is battery life more of a priority?

After all, the best vape kit for a new vaper will be a very different beast from the best vape kit for an experienced vaper who takes part in cloud-chasing competitions!

So, to help navigate to the best option for you, you’ll find a table view below which identifies what is special about each device in this post, along with a more detailed write up highlighting their key features.

How we selected these kits

It’s always tempting when writing a post like this to fill it with the latest, shiny devices.

But that would be a mistake.

Despite advances in technology, there are older vape kits that have withstood the test of time – and they’ve done so for a good reason.

The Aspire PockeX is a prime example of this – although it’s been around for several years now, it retains huge popularity. That’s probably down to the superb throat hit it gives – pretty much unmatched by any other starter kit we’ve experienced.

Instead, to select the kits here we’ve used a combination of our own ratings, the popularity of these devices, both in terms of sales and ‘on the scene’, as well as taking into account customer feedback. Very occasionally we’ll add a just launched kit to the list – but only if it totally blows us away in testing.

All the kits here are made to UK standards and are compliant with EU and UK regulations.

Types of vape kit

In this post you’ll find four types of vape devices.

Pod Systems: Pod vape systems were designed to be more compact and easier to use than mod systems. Typically, a pod system consists of a pod that clips into the part of the device that holds the battery. Closed pod systems refer to pods that come pre-filled with e-liquid (and can not usually be refilled), while open pods are refillable. See our round-up of the best pod systems here.

Pods have been evolving, and some devices have a power, battery life and functionality approaching that of an advanced mod device. These are often referred to as ‘pod mods’.

All-in-one vape devices: These devices contain everything you need to get started except the e-liquid. AIOs distinguish themselves by having no separate pod or tank, with e-liquid simply being filled into the top of the device itself.

Pen-style devices: Just as the name suggests, these devices are like an oversized pen and fit easily in the hand. Think chunky marker pen as opposed to a biro and you’ll be on the right track. See our round up of the best vape pens here.

Mod/tank kits: Mods are usually larger, more powerful vapes, often with a box design, and come with a separate tank. Some vape mods also come with more advanced functions and modes. You can find our buying guide to the best vape mods here.

Confused about which kind of device you need? See: Which Vape Kit Should You Buy?

In this post you’ll find we also refer to MTL (Mouth-to-Lung) or DL (Direct-Lung) inhale. You can find an explanation of what these terms mean in our MTL v. DL guide.

Best Vape Starter Kits for 2022

Hexa Pro: Cigarette-style throat hit

Hexa Pro

The  Hexa V2.0 device was hugely popular with vapers of all experience levels thanks to its easy to use features and unique hybrid nicotine blend that gave a great cigarette-style throat hit.

While the Hexa V2.0 has been discontinued, its latest upgrade – the Hexa Pro – carries on this impressive design with some extra improvements. These include a larger battery capacity and faster charging.

A great starter kit for new users looking for a no-fuss, cigarette-style vape experience, the Hexa Pro requires no set up or maintenance and has a closed pod design. Using the fixed-coil, pre-filled Hexa pods means there is no need for coil changes or refilling – you simply attach the pod to the device and start vaping. When the pod is empty you just replace it with a new one.

Also see the Hexa Mini for an even more compact version.

What we like

  • Cigarette-style throat hit
  • No refilling or coil changes needed
  • Improved battery life & upgraded charging

Vaporesso Xros Mini: Super easy to use

Vaporesso Xros Mini

The Vaporesso Xros Mini is a classic no-fuss pod device. Slim, compact and buttonless, its easy-to-use features make it a perfect fit for new vapers and anyone looking for an MTL device that requires little set-up or maintenance.

An upgrade on the original Xros thanks to its improved battery capacity, the Xros Mini comes with fixed coil pods, bypass output, auto inhale and leak-proof, top-filling pods that make using it really simple. To get started, all you need to do is charge the device, fill the pod and inhale.

Also see the Vaporesso Xros 2

What’s to like about it?

  • Fixed coil pods
  • No fuss auto output
  • Little set up required

Aspire Vilter: Cigarette-style tips

Aspire Vilter

The Innokin EQ is a great device, but some teething issues with the bung knocked it out of the running for our best vape kits post. Fortunately, shortly after the launch of the EQ the Aspire Vilter came along.

The Vilter is similar to the EQ – the key being the soft tip filter that replicates the look and feel of a regular cigarette. The vape it delivers is similar to that of a cigarette, it’s economical with e-liquid and delivers great flavour. We’ve also had excellent feedback from customers since this device was launched.

What’s to like about it?

  • Replicates the feel of a cigarette
  • Great taste
  • Economical use of e-liquid.

Aspire Pockex: Best throat hit

Aspire PockeX in different colours.

It’s not the first time that the Aspire PockeX makes it into our list of best starter kits. For a device which has now been around several years, it’s seen enduring popularity – not without reason. In addition to a solid build quality, this device produces one of the best throat hits we’ve experienced from an entry-level device. It also gives a superb throat hit, which I suspect is why it’s been so popular for so long.

What’s to like about it?

  • Easy-top-fill
  • Great throat hit
  • Great build quality

Top tip: It’s well worth putting a vape band around the glass in the tank. These cost just 99p, but help to protect the tank if it is dropped. Alternatively, the new Aspire PockeX Box (review) is a bit tougher than the original.

Smok Nord 2: Compact, stylish, flexible

Smok Nord 2 in multiple colours.

If there’s been a serious challenger to the Aspire PockeX in recent years, it’s been the Smok Nord. Part of the popular Nord Series, the Smok Nord 2 is still a compact device but now comes with a longer lasting 1500 mAh battery, while an increased wattage range (up to 40 watts) and compatibility with lower resistance coils means you can get thicker, denser vapour. The Nord 2 retains the comfortable, duck-billed mouthpiece that many customers have told us they love.

What’s to like about it?

  • Compact
  • Comfortable mouthpiece
  • Larger battery capacity and wattage range than the original Nord

Smok Nord 4: The most powerful Nord

Smok Nord 4

The Nord 4 is the most powerful of all devices in the uber-popular Nord range, with an 80W output and 2000mAh battery. This wider wattage range and compatibility with both RPM and RPM 2 coils mean it’s capable of supporting both Mouth-to-Lung & Direct-Lung vaping styles.

This sleek device is available in a range of styles, including chic leather options and features a unique rotating airflow control designed to look like a steering wheel. This gives both simple adjustment and precise control over tailoring your air intake and allows you to easily switch between a tighter or looser vape.

What’s to like about it?

  • Supports MTL & DL
  • Unique rotating airflow control

Innokin Adept Zlide: Long battery life, choice of vape styles

Innokin Adept Zlide, white, pictured on a table next to a laptop.

Not everyone wants a compact device, and for people looking for a chunkier mod device that still makes a great introduction to vaping, the Innokin Adept Zlide is a brilliant option. This device comes with a long-lasting 3000 mAh battery that easily beats the battery levels of most entry-level pod systems, while with a switch of the coil and a tweak of the airflow settings, you can go from a tight, restricted vape to a loose, airy vape with more vapour.

What’s to like about it?

  • Tough, rugged, water-resistant
  • Auto-coil detection makes it easy to use
  • Long-lasting battery

Uwell Caliburn G2 & Caliburn A2: Best pod devices for flavour

Originally, the Uwell Caliburn G was featured in this post due to its popularity and unrivalled flavour.

But now we’re adding two newer versions from the Caliburn range – the Caliburn G2 and Caliburn A2. Both devices continue the ease to use of their predecessor with a simple design, automatic output and inhale firing –  plus some updates for an even better vape experience.

The Caliburn G2 is just as easy to use as the Caliburn G but improves on it with a larger battery capacity and even better flavour thanks to Uwell’s PRO-FOCS technology. There’s also the addition of a new haptic feedback feature – with different vibration patterns alerting you to issues with the device.

The Caliburn A2, while having a smaller battery capacity, offers even more convenience for new vapers as its fixed-coil pod design means there’s no need for manual coil changes.

What’s to like about it?:

  • Great flavour
  • Open system – use with your favourite e-liquid
  • Choice of coils (Caliburn G2)
  • No-fuss fixed-coil pods (Caliburn A2)
  • Works well with nicotine salts

Best Pod Mod Kits for 2022

Voopoo Drag S/Drag X & PnP-X Pod: Stunning aesthetics

Voopoo Drag X - classics.

The Voopoo Drag S/Drag X & PnP-X pod devices use a combination of leather and metal for a device which has stunning aesthetics and is comfortable to hold. There are two versions to choose from here. The Drag S comes with a fixed 2500 mAh battery and can produce up to 60 watts of power. Meanwhile, the Drag X, which can pump out up to 80 watts, is powered by a replaceable 18650 battery (not included) which makes it great for vapers who like to swap out the battery when it runs out of power instead of attaching the device to a USB-C cable.

What’s to like about it?

  • Stunning aesthetics
  • Plenty of power
  • Anti-scratch, antiperspirant and anti-fingerprint

See all Voopoo Drag devices compared.

Vaporesso Target 80 & iTank/ Target 100 & Target 200: Best for flavour

Sometimes you wait for a great vape device – and 3 turn up at the same time. Vaporesso simultaneously released their 3 new target devices in late 2021 and, while they are only a few months old at the time of writing this, the amazing flavour they provide means they had to be included.

In fact, we were so impressed with the flavour from these kits we declared it the best we’ve experienced. This accolade came from trying the Target 100 using its innovative F(t) mode, paired with the iTank with its Turbo airflow system and the new mesh-design GTi coils.

Design-wise, the devices manage to be lightweight yet tough with a cage-like metal frame and a water-resistant braid finish that makes them extra comfortable to hold.

You don’t need to be an expert to use these kits but they are more suited to users with some experience as you have a choice of 5 modes including VW, Bypass, Pulse & DIY mode (see advanced vaping modes). There’s also a bright, colour screen to help you manage the device – with a user-friendly interface that cleverly increases/reduces the amount of information displayed depending on the mode you’re using.

So why do we need 3 versions of the same device? The differences lay in the power output and battery designs. The Target 200 fires 200W and uses 2 x 18650 batteries for maximum battery life, the Target 100 fires 100W & uses a single replaceable battery or, if you’d prefer a fixed-battery mod for simplicity, the Target 80 has a 3000mAh battery while still firing a decent 80W of power.

What’s to like about it?:

  • Great flavour
  • Choice of 5 modes
  • Tough yet lightweight construction

Best vape mod kits for 2022

Aspire Zelos 3: Precise airflow control

Aspire Zelos 3

The Aspire Zelos 3 is a truly versatile vape kit. Combining the Zelos 3 mod with the Nautilus 3 tank means it works with the entire Nautilus coil range – giving you the option of both MTL & DL vaping. The tank’s choice of 7 different-sized airflow holes also means you can tailor your vape to give you anything from a tight restricted to vape to a loose, airy inhale.

The Zelos 3 itself outputs up to 80W, has a respectable 3200mAh battery and is fairly compact for a mod. The impressive factor in the Zelos 3 mod is its choice of 6 different modes, with a mode to suit vapers of most experience levels (although we wouldn’t recommend it to a complete beginner). From battery-dictated bypass mode all the way up to the more advanced Temperature Control mode, there is an option to suit anyone.

What’s to like about it?

  • Wide range of modes
  • For MTL & DL
  • Large battery capacity

Smok Morph 2: 230 Watts of power

Smok Morph 2

The most powerful mod on this list, the 230W Smok Morph 2 isn’t the newest device out there but still gets a mention thanks to its powerful, tough and stylish design.

A combination of leather and zinc alloy makes the Morph 2 not only attractive but also tough and light. It’s also powered by dual 18650 batteries which provide plenty of battery life and can easily be swapped should they run out. There’s the option of standard Variable Wattage (VW) mode as well as more advanced Temperature Control (TC) mode for the more advanced vapers among us.

The Morph 2 kit includes the TFV-Mini V2 tank and Mini V2 coils capable of producing big flavour and vapour. Combined with a high-powered output, this kit is a great choice for cloud chasers.

What’s to like about it?:

  • Compact & lightweight, yet tough
  • Big flavour & vapour
  • Replaceable batteries

Geekvape Aegis L200: Super tough & perfect for the outdoors

Geekvape Aegis L200

The Geekvape L200 is one of the toughest vape mods you’ll find. This 200W mod is a newer, smaller yet more durable version of the Aegis Legend. Rated IP68, it’s dustproof, shockproof and waterproof which, combined with its external battery design and flip charging port cover and the fact it can withstand a temperature range of -20 to 60°C, makes it the perfect outdoor vape. There’s also the inclusion of a sliding locking button that will prevent accidental firing and help extend both your battery and coil life.

The L200 kit combines the L200 mod with the Geekvape Zeus (Z) tank (widely known as the best sub-ohm tank on the market) and Zeus (Z) coils, making it suited for Direct-Lung vaping. However, as both the mod and tank have 510 connections you can simply swap the tank with a different one if you prefer to vape Mouth-to-Lung.

What’s to like about it?

  • Extremely tough
  • Compact
  • Lock feature

Eleaf iStick Power 2: Best for MTL Vaping

Eleaf iStick Power 2

I’ve long been a fan of the iStick series, and the new iStick Power 2 doesn’t disappoint. This solid device boasts an impressive 5000 mAh battery. That means when you use it as an MTL device (which is where its strengths lie) the battery can last for days.

The carbon fibre and leather design make for great aesthetics, and Smart Mode means it is really easy to use, even for vapers with limited experience. It also produces excellent taste and a warm vape when used with the GTL pod tank.

What’s to like about it?

  • Long-lasting battery
  • Great aesthetics
  • Easy to use

Horizontech Falcon II tank + Geekvape Aegis Max mod: Best for clouds

Blue Falcon II Tank

The Horizontech Falcon II tank remains the best tank we’ve seen for clouds. A lot of that is down to the fan-woven conical mesh coil, which funnels the air up from the bottom of the coil for superb vapour clouds and in intense flavour, while the cotton and wood pulp filling material is designed to hold plenty of e-liquid.

Geekvape Aegis Max

To handle the low resistance coils, you need to match the tank with a mod that can supply at least 75 watts of power. We suggest using it with the super-tough, replaceable battery Aegis Max mod.

What’s to like about it?

  • Thick, dense vapour
  • Wide wattage range with both mods
  • Suitable for advanced vapers

What’s going to happen in 2022?

Vaping constantly has the ability to surprise us. In 2021, pod mods started off strong, but as the year developed disposable vapes surged in popularity. This trend looks set to continue for a while, but as new vapers cotton on to the expense of disposable vapes (not to mention the harm to the environment), there may be more interest in other vape kits.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on the best kits and updating this post as the year goes on. In the meantime, do let us know what your favourite kit is and why in the comments below!

  1. Hello James, now we are out of the EU can we petition the government to revert back to 5 ml tanks and 2.4 mg fluid strength?
    Alan Kultschar

      1. I hope you succeed! You know, it’s sad to think that 18-24 months ago I was feeling bad for the UK and their “ ridiculous“ restrictions on nicotine strength and tank sizes. Being an American and believing I lived in a free country (😂🤣😂😅) I knew that at the end of the day, American Vapers would be left to our own desires. Can you imagine?

Today in this benevolent fascist America, the poor idiots that run this country are too ignorant to believe that it takes 4 DIFFERENT flavors to create the ONLY legal flavor allowed in this god forsaken country? And, killing off online shops delivering to anywhere in the US, an excise tax, and a nicotine tax that make a 60ml bottle of crap tobacco FLAVOR more than $50USD when purchased in a local vape shop, just makes me a raging/laughing idiot!

You guys, the ones “I” felt bad for, enjoy your freedom to vape any flavor you want, while this sad fascist country watched tens of thousands of businesses fail and a couple hundred thousand people lose their jobs through a pandemic that turned out to be better ignored than spending trillions of dollars for to wind up with double digit inflation and millions out of work.

Despite all this, vape companies have cut back a lot, on new products and innovations just because this stupid country wants its citizens to smoke cigarettes. In the end, the UK may be free to vape, but the US is the reason why SMOK MORPH 4 isn’t out, and you’re still stuck with MORPH 2, a great looking device with a wonky Fire button. 🙄

Worst government America has ever had.

  2. I gave up smoking 4 years ago after 45 years
My daughter brought me an arc 5 I have it set on 12.0 and use fusion 6mg liquid . Tried many many but hate them all . It’s easy to change coil and the new push lid makes it simple to fill . They still sell for £35.00 new . When it breaks I will give up the vape forever .

  3. Hi James just wanted to say thank for the review. I am always looking for advice and the best vape equipment and always revert back to your excellent reviews.
    Kind regards

  4. Been using smok 2 for a about a year. Usually run 2 or 3 of them for ease of use, but the electronics control pack up after a few months or less! The have all been replaced at no cost. But something is wrong somewhere?
