14 Best Vape Starter Kits For 2022 (UK)

Updated February 2022

Choosing your first kit is one of the most important decisions you can make as a new vaper. If it’s too difficult to use, or not satisfying enough, you might well find yourself back on the cigarettes.

Luckily, there are plenty of kits specifically designed to cater to new, less experienced vapers who want a straightforward introduction to vaping. This list identifies the best of the best.

We don’t just add a kit here because it is new, though. After all, just because it’s not brand new doesn’t mean it’s not a great kit. At the same time, just because a kit is new doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better than an older kit. So you’ll still see some steady favourites here, such as the Aspire PockeX, but you’ll also find some impressive new devices here, such as the Hexa Pro.

Types of vape starter kits

In this post you’ll find four types of beginner vape devices.

Pod Systems: Vape pods are super easy-to-use and come with a pod that clips into a compact battery. They come with either pre-filled or refillable pods.

All-in-one vape devices: These devices contain everything you need to get started. AIOs distinguish themselves by having no separate pod or tank, with e-liquid simply being filled into the top of the device itself.

Pen-style devices: Just as the name suggests, these devices are like an oversized pen and fit easily in the hand. Think chunky marker pen as opposed to a biro and you’ll be along the right track.

Mod/tank kits: Mods are usually larger, more powerful vapes, often with a box design, which also come with a separate tank.

Here are 14 of the best starter kits to choose from. Read on to see each device in more detail.

Best starter kits in depth

Aspire Vilter: Most like a cigarette

Aspire Vilter

The Aspire Vilter features a soft filter that looks and feels just like a cigarette. This filter makes it ideal for smokers who miss the soft feeling of a cigarette, and it also delivers a vape experience very close to smoking. Handily, if you run out of or don’t want to replace the filters you can also use it just like a regular device by inhaling on the pod.

If there’s one drawback, it’s that the replaceable filter tips aren’t biodegradable, as with the Innokin EQ FLTR. However, over time we’ve found a few teething issues with EQ FLTR (see review) – it’s still a great device, but there have been enough issues for the Vilter to take its place in our top starter kit recommendations.

What’s to like:

  • Replicates the feel of a cigarette
  • Great taste
  • Economical use of e-liquid.

Hexa Pro: Best closed pod system

Hexa Pro

The  Hexa V2.0 device was hugely popular with vapers of all experience levels thanks to its easy to use features and unique hybrid nicotine blend that gave a great cigarette-style throat hit.

While the Hexa V2.0 has been discontinued, its latest upgrade – the Hexa Pro – carries on this impressive design with some extra improvements. These include a larger battery capacity and faster charging.

A great starter kit for new users looking for a no-fuss, cigarette-style vape experience, the Hexa Pro requires no set up or maintenance and has a closed pod design. Using the fixed-coil, pre-filled Hexa pods means there is no need for coil changes or refilling – you simply attach the pod to the device and start vaping. When the pod is empty you just replace it with a new one.

Also see the Hexa Mini for an even more compact version.

What we like

  • Cigarette-style throat hit
  • No refilling or coil changes needed
  • Improved battery life & upgraded charging

Riot Squad Q Bar: No-fuss introduction to vaping

Riot Squad Q Bar

We would always recommend regular, reusable vape devices over disposable vapes, as they are both more economical and a better alternative for the environment However, we can’t deny they make a great no-fuss introduction to vaping and are, of course, a better alternative than cigarettes.

The Q Bar range from Riot Squad are super easy for new vapers as they are ready to use out of the box. No filling, coil changes or charging needed –  you simply inhale on the bar to start vaping!

Each Q Bar is prefilled with a nicotine salt blend in a choice of flavours ranging from tobacco to fruity. All flavours are available in 3 nicotine strength options – including a rarely-seen 0% option.

A fixed 420mAh battery means each Q Bar lasts up to 550 puffs before needing to be disposed of. When the battery runs out you simply replace the Q bar with a new one.

What’s to like:

  • Ready to use – no set up needed
  • Choice of flavours & strengths

Uwell Caliburn G2 and Caliburn A2: Best for flavour

Originally, the Uwell Caliburn G was featured in this post due to its popularity and unrivalled flavour.

But now we’re adding two newer versions from the Caliburn range – the Caliburn G2 and Caliburn A2. Both devices continue the ease to use of their predecessor with a simple design, automatic output and inhale firing –  plus some updates for an even better vape experience.

The Caliburn G2 is just as easy to use as the Caliburn G but improves on it with a larger battery capacity and even better flavour thanks to Uwell’s PRO-FOCS technology. There’s also the addition of a new haptic feedback feature – with different vibration patterns alerting you to issues with the device.

The Caliburn A2, while having a smaller battery capacity, offers even more convenience for new vapers as its fixed-coil pod design means there’s no need for manual coil changes.

What’s to like:

  • Great flavour
  • Open system – use with your favourite e-liquid
  • Choice of coils (Caliburn G2)
  • No-fuss fixed-coil pods (Caliburn A2)
  • Works well with nicotine salts

Aspire PockeX: Most popular

Aspire PockeX in different colours.

The Aspire PockeX has been around for a while now – indeed, it made it into last year’s round up – but its popularity shows no signs of slowing. The PockeX was one of the first devices to combine a traditional pen-style device with a lower resistance coil to create some real oomph in an otherwise easy-to-use starter kit. Indeed, many of our staff continue to use the PockeX, which is saying something given they are exposed to a constant influx of new devices.

What’s to like:

  • Easy-top-fill
  • High quality vape
  • Great build quality

Top tip: It’s well worth putting a vape band around the top tank. These cost just one pound, but help to protect the tank if it is dropped.

Update: It’s also worth checking out the new Aspire PockeX Box (review) which features several improved features.

Smok Novo 4: The chance to experiment

Smok Novo 4

The Smok Novo 4 has all the elements needed for a new vaper’s first kit –  simple, single-button design, easy filling pods and push-fit coil installation.

While easy-to-use features are great for beginners, an added bonus of this Novo 4 is the other features that allow you to start experimenting as you become more experienced. This helps you progress, discover your preferences and also means there is no need to buy another device as you become more advanced.

One of the standout features is the Novo 4’s easy to control airflow wheel. This allows you to precisely control the airflow and experiment with a more airy or restricted inhale to see which you prefer.

There’s also the inclusion of a small OLED screen displaying device information – a feature not usually found on starter kits. This helps you keep tabs on the status of the device and learn more about how it is operating.

What’s to like:

  • Airflow control wheel
  • OLED screen
  • Gives you the chance to experiment

Innokin Go-S: No Coil Changes

Innokin Go-S in different colours.

The Innokin Go S is a simple and easy-to-use device which has proven popular with customers and staff alike. Although this is a tank system, the device is really easy to use, and is ideal for people who struggle with coil changes, as the coils are built into the tank. Despite its simplicity, the Go S produces an excellent vape.

What’s to like:

  • Super easy to use

Adept Zlide Kit: Toughest device

If you vape outdoors a lot, or have a job that involves knocks and scrapes, the Adept Zlide might be the device for you. Water-poof, dust-proof and shock-proof, this vape kit is designed to last even when conditions are not ideal.

But there’s more than toughness to this tank system. For a start, it comes with a very impressive 3000mAh battery meaning that it has tonnes of battery life, while an intelligent wattage selection mode automatically selects the right power settings for the coil you are using. This takes the guesswork out of selecting the right coil and helps ensures the coils last longer.

What’s to like:

  • Built to withstand knocks
  • Superb battery life
  • Auto-wattage selection means longer lasting coils

Smok Nord 2: Stylish, compact, versatile

Smok Nord in hand.

The original Smok Nord, which also featured on the original version of this post, proved one of the most popular devices of 2020 due to its duck-billed pod designed to fit the contours of the mouth, stylish design and excellent performance.

The new Nord 2 comes with some major improvements. It replaces the original wattage range of 10-15 watts with a much-increased range of 1 – 40 watts, which means you can get much larger clouds of vapour by increasing the power. It also comes with a choice of pods and coils, one suited for a restricted vape and one for an airier vape with more vapour.

What’s to like:

  • Can handle two types of e-liquid
  • Stylish
  • Comfortable mouthpiece

Innokin Endura T18II: Classic Pen Style

Innokin Endura T18II

This may not be the newest device on our sites, but this popular device has garnered 116 reviews with an average rating of 4.8/5. The device is easy to use while allowing you to adjust the heat and airflow so you can customise your device to your preferences. Customers have also praised the battery life of the device and the long-lasting coils, which make it economical to use.

What’s to like:

  • Easy-to-use
  • Adjustable airflow and heat
  • Excellent performance

Vaporesso Xros Mini: Discreet, compact, great performance

Vaporesso Xros Mini

Full of all the features that make a perfect starter kit and at a great price for those on a budget, the Xros Mini has everything a new vaper would need.

Slim, compact and buttonless, with fixed-coil pods, auto output and draw activation, the Xros Mini requires hardly any setup. Just fill the pod and attach it to the device, wait a few minutes for the coil to soak up the e-liquid and then simply inhale on the mouthpiece to start vaping.

The fixed-coil pods are particularly convenient as it eliminates the need for fiddly or time-consuming coil changes. You simply replace the whole pod when the coil reaches the end of its life.

What’s to like:

  • Auto output
  • Fixed coils
  • Budget friendly

Vaporesso GTX One: Choice of modes & vaping styles

Vaporesso GTX One

While you may not expect a mod and tank kit to appear on a starter kit list, the Vaporesso GTX One has enough ease of use to justify its position – plus more advanced features that can still be used as you become more experienced. This means there won’t be any need to buy a new kit later down the line.

The GTX One mod has a wattage range of 5 – 40W. A choice of 2 modes mean new vapers can use the coil-detecting Smart Mode, which will automatically set the best wattage and can then switch to Variable Wattage (VW) mode as they become more experienced.

The included GTX 18 tank has adjustable airflow and works with the GTX coil range – with enough resistance options to support both a restricted, cigarette-style vape and an airier vape with more clouds suitable for more experienced vapers. (Do note that you will need to purchase different coils for a ‘cloudier’ vape). This, again, means that as you become more experienced and want to experiment with different styles, e-liquids and coil resistances, this kit will still be suitable.

What we like:

  • Multiple modes
  • Money-saving in the long run
  • Wide range of coil resistance

Innokin I.O: Compact & Budget Friendly

Innokin IO

The Innokin I.O is small in size and small in price, At just 87x14mm, this palm-sized pod vape will leave an equally small dent in your bank balance. This makes it ideal for a new vaper looking for a budget-friendly, super portable vape.

With draw activation, fixed coils and auto output, the simple, buttonless device means there is no fussing with settings or coil changes.

The I.O is a great starter vape, especially for former smokers making the switch, thanks to its tight, cigarette-style draw that resembles a cigarette.

What’s to like:

  • Super-compact
  • Budget friendly
  • Fixed coils & auto draw
