Best MTL vape kits in depth

Vaporesso Xros 5: Best all-round option

Hands holding a Vaporesso Xros 5 vape kitReviewed by: Emily, ECD Team

What we like:
✔️ 50% extra battery capacity
✔️ Airflow and power work well together
✔️ Easy to use
What we don’t like:
Corex 3 pods not available at time of writing

Xros holds its place this year, with the Xros 5 stepping in to replace the Xros 4. Long-time Xros fans will notice that much is familiar, but the standout improvement is the battery. At 1500mAh, it has 50% more capacity than the original and comfortably lasts me into a second working day of vaping.

I would have liked the option for slightly wider airflow, but for a restricted MTL vape the combination of airflow control and variable power is excellent. The flavour is excellent, especially with the Corex 3 pods - but annoyingly, at the time of writing, the new 2ml Corex 3 pods aren’t yet available for sale.

I found the power adjustments and menu system straightforward to use, but if you prefer something more compact and stripped-back, opt for the Xros 5 Mini instead.

Oxva Xlim Pro 2 DNA

Hand holding an Oxva Xlim Pro 2 DNA vape kitReviewed by: Lloyd, ECD Team

What we like:
✔️ Best flavour yet
✔️ Anti-burn technology
✔️ Transparent pod
What’s not to like:
Fiddly bung

After testing dozens of devices for E-Cigarette Direct, I don’t say this lightly – the Xlim Pro 2 DNA is the best-tasting vape I’ve ever used.

The secret is the DNA chip, which not only delivers incredible flavour but also adds smart features. The anti-burn mode, for example, is a lifesaver if, like me, you sometimes forget to top up your e-liquid.

Unfortunately, and despite the taste, the device is let down by a fiddly bung, which is difficult to take out with short fingernails. I also had a faulty 0.8ohm pod with the device*. If it wasn’t for those issues, I’d be ditching my trusty Xros 5 for this device.

*Note this appears to be a one-off issue, as we have not had problems with this pod since.

Innokin Adept Zlide: Rugged with a battery that won’t quit

Innokin Adept Zlide outside on a kerbReviewed by: James, ECD Team

What we like:
✔️ Huge 3000mAh battery
✔️ Rugged, water and dust resistant build
✔️ Automatic wattage selection
✔️ Reliable flavour
What’s not to like:
Larger and heavier than pod kits

The Adept Zlide is built to last. With its chunky metal body and rounded edges, it feels solid in the hand and tough enough to shrug off the odd drop - perfect if you’re a bit clumsy or spend a lot of time outdoors.

Setup takes a little more effort than a pod kit, since you need to fit and prime the coil, but the intelligent wattage adjustment makes sure the power is always right for your coil.

The Zlide tank is easy to fill and produces consistent flavour, though the draw is slightly airier than some MTL kits and I found the mouthpiece less comfortable than others.

The real winner here is the battery. At 3000mAh, it comfortably delivers two days of vaping without a recharge, making it one of the longest-lasting devices on this list.

Oxva Xlim Pro 2: Versatile & impressive battery life

Oxva Xlim Pro 2 vape kitReviewed by: Lloyd, ECD Team

What we like:
✔️ Quality finish
✔️ Great flavour
✔️ Adjustable wattage and airflow
✔️ Vibrant screen
What’s not to like:
Fiddly bung
Charging time not displayed on screen

The Xlim Pro 2 is a very impressive pod device that provides all the flavour you’d want from a vape kit. Slim and lightweight with a high-quality metal finish, the flavour produced was great, as I’d expect from the Xlim series (although the rubber bung filling can be a little fiddly).

I like that the device has both adjustable wattage and airflow, allowing me to customise my vape while still being easy to use. The 1350mAh battery may not be quite as big as the Xros 5’s, but after a full day of use (350 puffs) it was still going strong.

The button click patterns are easy to use and, if you forget, you can simply hold down the button for instructions. The screen is vibrant with a clean display and I like that you can vape while the device is charging - although I do wish the remaining charging time was displayed on the screen.

Overall, this is a perfect device for those looking for a compact, high-quality pod kit that’s easy to use yet customisable with great flavour and battery life.

Elf Bar 600: Beginner-friendly, disposable-style flavour

Elf Bar 600 prefilled vape kit on a light blue backgroundReviewed by: Helen, ECD Team

What we like:
✔️ Sleek, lightweight and comfortable to hold
✔️ Strong, consistent flavour
✔️ Very easy to set up and use
✔️ Rechargeable battery outlasts older Elf Bars
✔️ Great choice for people with dexterity issues
What we don’t like:
No charging cable
Airy draw may not suit all MTL vapers

Compact and lightweight, the Elf Bar 600 feels similar to the classic disposable model but adds the benefit of a rechargeable battery. I found the flavour impressively strong and consistent from start to finish, lasting as long as the e-liquid itself with no drop-off in taste.

The draw is slightly airy for a restricted MTL vape, but still smooth and satisfying. The pods were a doddle to replace, making it a great option for anyone with dexterity issues or who prefers a simple, no-fuss device. Battery performance was solid, lasting longer than the older disposable models.

While the kit doesn’t include a charging cable or clear guidance on the LED indicator, the red light signals when it’s time to recharge.

Overall, the simplicity, flavour and ease of use make the Elf Bar 600 an excellent entry-level MTL device – and one of the most accessible options on this list.

Aspire PockeX: Best for throat hit

Aspire PockeX vape kit on a grey backgroundReviewed by: James, ECD Team

What we like:
✔️ Strong throat hit similar to a cigarette when used with freebase e-liquid
✔️ Consistent, satisfying MTL draw
✔️ Reliable all-day battery
✔️ Simple, single-button operation
What we don’t like:
Refilling fiddly compared to modern pod systems
Glass tank can break if dropped
Slight rattle from fire button

The Aspire PockeX has been a go-to MTL kit for years, and it still earns its place thanks to its consistency and cigarette-like experience. Compact and durable, it’s perfect for vapers who value simplicity and a strong throat hit. When paired with freebase e-liquid, it delivers a hit that’s remarkably close to smoking – one of the key reasons so many ex-smokers stick with it.

Flavour and vapour performance remain impressive for such a small device. The fixed airflow provides a balanced, restricted draw with enough punch to satisfy even heavy smokers. The single-button design makes it easy to use, and the 1500mAh battery comfortably lasts a full day of MTL vaping.

While the top-fill system was once innovative, it now feels dated compared to modern pod kits, which are faster and less fiddly to refill. The glass tank can also crack if dropped, and the button has a slight rattle, but these are small trade-offs for a tried-and-tested device that continues to deliver great performance.
