Lee quit his day job working customer service at a bank and started writing professionally in 2011, working on freelance projects through Demand Media (now Leaf Group) and independently, working on everything from explanatory science articles to guitar lessons.
After a couple of years working on pretty much any topic he could (and finding time to travel, drink and eat his way around Southeast Asia in the process) a previous client got in touch and offered him a new job. Knowing that he was a smoker at the time, the offer involved trying out an electronic cigarette. It was a pretty basic device – an early cigalike from Green Smoke – but the day he received it was the last day he smoked.
Like many vapers, Lee never intended to quit smoking, but vaping just seemed to make more sense because it provided the nicotine he was looking for in a safer form. After reviewing many more devices for EcigaretteReviewed, he learned more and more about the controversy surrounding vaping and reading more of the studies coming out each week.
He started blogging on the same site, covering the research on vaping in-depth and writing many posts on the controversies surrounding vaping more generally. Over time, he dropped most of his previous clients and focused on writing about vaping full time, and in 2015 he started writing for the Ashtray Blog at E-Cigarette Direct. Later, he would contribute some posts to Vaping360, as well as blogs for the e-liquid company Black Note.
Alongside his writing, Lee studied part time for an Open University degree in physics, graduating in 2018 and starting a masters in theoretical physics at Uppsala University in Sweden in 2019. In his spare time, Lee plays guitar, loses to his friends at various board games, sometimes wins at video games and drinks more tea than is probably medically advisable.
