Mouth-to-lung (MTL) refers to a style of vaping wherethe vapour is first drawn into the mouth, and then held there briefly before being inhaled into the lungs. This contrasts to DTL vaping, when the vapour is inhaled in a continuous flow through the mouth and into the lungs. The difference is illustrated in the image below.
Typically, MTL vape tanks have a more restricted airflow and produce less vapour than direct-to-lung tanks. These tanks also use higher resistance coils than tanks used for DTL vaping, and require less power. The lower power requirements also mean that batteries last longer than they do with DTL tanks.
One of the keys to MTL vaping is the coil and the airflow. If a tank can be used with both high and low resistance coils, and the airflow can be adjusted from tight to open, it can usually be used for either mouth-to-lung and direct-to-lung vaping. MTL tanks work best with e-liquids with a VG:PG ratio of around 50:50, such as Halo Vapour Co.
The mouth-to-lung experience is similar to that of smoking, making it ideal for people who have recently switched from smoking to vaping. However, many experienced vapers continue to enjoy MTL vaping. Some vapers also believe that MTL is better for flavour than DTL vaping.
