Freebase vape juices are the 10ml bottles of ‘regular’ e-liquid you’ll see on shelves. It’s given its name due to the freebase nicotine it contains (as opposed to the natural form found in nicotine salts).
This freebase nicotine gives a stronger throat hit than nicotine salts, making them ideal for former smokers who miss the catch on their throat from smoking.
Most 10ml freebase e-liquids come with a VG:PG range 40:60 or 50:50 - making them ideal for use in starter kits and lower-powered vape devices.
However, you’ll sometimes find 10mls with a higher VG:PG ratio (e.g 70:30), making them suited to higher-powered devices using low-resistance coils.
There was a time when larger bottles of nicotine-containing e-liquid were available. However, when the EU regulated e-liquid, they decided to limit the maximum size to 10ml.
While some e-liquids are available in larger bottles, they have to be nicotine free. These bottles are known as shortfills, as they have a space at the top to add nicotine shots separately.
Nicotine salts are also contained in 10ml bottles. However, they are often treated differently from standard 10ml ranges, which contain freebase nicotine.
When we get a sample of an e-liquid range, it gets assigned to a tester. This allows us to try the products for ourselves and assess performance and flavour.
When products go on sale, we monitor customer feedback and the reasons for returns.
Creating our blog posts always involves a lot of chats with our customer service team as we want to ensure we present accurate feedback on the products we recommend (including any downsides!)
What are the advantages of using 10ml freebase vape juice?
10ml vape juice comes pre-mixed with nicotine, making it more convenient and easier to use than shortfills. You can also precisely choose the nicotine strength you want.
At the same time, 10ml vape juice is far cheaper than using disposables. A disposable vape comes with just 2ml of e-liquid, meaning the average cost is around £2.50 per ml! In contrast, 10ml vape juice costs around about 39p per ml.

Can I use 10ml e-liquids in sub-ohm devices?
As sub-ohm devices use coils with lower resistances and larger port holes, they are not suited to 10ml e-liquids with a VG:PG ratio of 40:60 or 50:50. However, you can use them with freebase 10ml e-liquids with a higher VG:PG ratio such as 70:30.
You may find that you are better off with shortfills, as these typically come with a higher VG:PG ratio than most 10ml bottles. When you use a sub-ohm device, you tend to go through a lot more vape juice too, so you may prefer the larger size found in shortfills.
Are 10ml freebase e-liquids suitable for beginners?
Yes, freebase e-liquids are perfectly suited to beginners. We recommend using them with a fixed-coil pod device such as the Vaporesso Xros 3, Xros 3 Mini or Oxva Xlim Pro.
There are a couple of things to remember - when you first fill the pod, allow the e-liquid to soak in for a few minutes before using it. Secondly, remember to change your pod from time to time.
An even easier option is to use a pre-filled pod, such as that found with the Elf Bar Elfa Pro.

How many cigarettes is a bottle of 10ml e-liquid equivalent to?
That very much depends on the strength you use.
The average cigarette pack of 20 cigarettes contains around 250mg of nicotine. You can work out how many cigarettes your vape juice is equal to by calculating the amount of nicotine in the bottle.
For example, a bottle of 10ml e-liquid with a nicotine strength of 10mg/ml contains 100mg of nicotine.
Choosing the right nicotine strength is essential for smokers switching to vaping. For helpful guidance see Nicotine & E-Liquid: What Strength Do You Need?
